Diagnosis of Carotid Atheroma by Panoramic Radiography: Case Series

Abstract

In routine dentistry, panoramic radiography is used to observe the dentition and diagnose maxillary pathologies. Atheroma is characterized by calcification in the internal arterial wall being observed radiographically as a radiopaque mass located in the intervertebral space between the C3 and C4 vertebrae. The present study aimed to report a series of cases of diagnosis employing panoramic radiography. There were used 4 cases of patients with images suggestive of atheroma on panoramic radiography and aging between 69 to 75 years. In the present study, it was observed that the bilateral occurrence was more frequent than the unilateral and had a higher incidence in patients older than 60 years. It's concluded that the panoramic radiographic examination establishes a relevant contribution to the dental surgeon in early diagnosis and that atheroma is a massive factor for strokes.
