Abstract

Dental implants are often used in the oral rehabilitation of total or partial edentulous patients. Patients with an evident high smile line and a thin gingival phenotype represent significant aesthetic challenges. The reason is that the material of the underlying prosthetic component may show through the peri-implant mucosa, causing the region to appear grayish and compromising the naturalness and harmony of the treatment. The aim of this article is to report a clinical case in which a pink anodized abutment was used in a patient with a thin gingival phenotype, in order to mask the gingival darkening and improve the clinical outcome. The clinical outcomes suggest an immediate aesthetic improvement after the installation of the modified abutment. Bearing that in mind, we can infer that this may be a viable approach for future rehabilitations, although further studies are still needed.
