Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of oral health on the performance of daily activities and the degree of involvement with licit and illicit substances in drug addicts. This is a cross-sectional study with 20 drug addicts in two therapeutic communities. The sociodemographic profile was verified, oral health conditions were assessed by the DMFT and Use and Need for Prosthesis indices, and the ASSIST (Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) and OIDP (Oral Impacts on Daily Performances) instruments were used. The sample consisted of 50% men and 50% women, with a mean age of 41.75 years (±9.3); 55% had complete or incomplete elementary education. The mean DMFT was 12.8 (±8.95). Regarding the use and need for prosthesis, only 20% used some kind of prosthesis, however, 65% needed prosthetic rehabilitation. In the OIDP, half of the addicts had a medium to high impact on the performance of daily activities, with the main oral problems being tooth color (n=60%), tooth loss (n=50%) and toothache (n=40%). In the ASSIST, the degree of involvement with alcohol (45%) and tobacco (100%) was moderate and the substances of greatest risk were crack and cocaine. It is concluded that chemical dependents have a high rate of dental caries and that oral health conditions can negatively impact the performance of daily activities. The substances of greatest involvement are tobacco, alcohol and cocaine. The results highlight the need for public policies that integrate dental care with the treatment of chemical dependency.
