Resumen

Introducción: El síndrome de Down es una condición genética causada por la presencia de tres cromosomas 21, resultando en varias alteraciones en los sistemas craneofacial y estomatognático, que favorecen el desarrollo de la apnea obstructiva del sueño. Objetivo: Revisar la relación entre la apnea obstructiva del sueño y el síndrome de Down, destacando el papel del dentista en el rastreo y manejo de esta condición. Método: Investigación en las bases de datos PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, Web of Science y Google Académico, resultando en la selección de 46 artículos. Resultados: La apnea obstructiva del sueño, caracterizada por interrupciones recurrentes en la respiración durante el sueño, es común en personas con síndrome de Down. La falta de tratamiento puede llevar a problemas neurocognitivos y sistémicos, afectando negativamente el desarrollo y la calidad de vida de los pacientes. El rastreo cuidadoso y la derivación adecuada al especialista son fundamentales para asegurar el bienestar y la calidad del sueño. Conclusión: El dentista es fundamental en la identificación y tratamiento de la apnea obstructiva del sueño, utilizando dispositivos intraorales y expansión rápida del maxilar.
