Current Non-Invasive Treatments for Dentin Hypersensitivity: an Integrative Review

Introduction: Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) is an increasingly common condition in dental clinical practice, characterized by a sharp and short-lasting pain in response to thermal, tactile, osmotic, and chemical stimuli, generally associated with dentin exposure. Its clinical management should consider the multifactorial nature of its etiology. Objective: To perform an integrative review of the literature on current non-invasive treatments for the control of DH. Material and Methods: Search strategies were developed for the PubMed, SciELO, and the Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases. Articles published between 2020 and 2025 were included. Results: Twenty-one studies were included in the review. The main treatments applied for DH were fluoride varnishes, sealants, adhesives, and desensitizing agents based on potassium oxalate, potassium nitrate, and glutaraldehyde, as well as desensitizing toothpastes. Therapies with low- and high-power lasers, ozone therapy, and combinations of different approaches were also reported. Conclusion: Several therapeutic strategies have been used for the control of DH, with varying outcomes. Laser therapy stands out as a promising alternative, acting both in pain modulation and in the reduction of dentin permeability. When associated with other desensitizing agents, it may enhance clinical outcomes, contributing to greater effectiveness in the treatment of DH.
