Abstract

Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) is a clinical procedure that aims to provide affordable, effective, and minimally invasive oral health care. Developed by the World Health Organization, this method is especially relevant in healthcare settings, where access to dental services is often limited and demand is high. The technique is based on the gentle mechanical removal of decayed tissue and the application of a restorative material, such as glass ionomer cement, to restore the function and aesthetics of the affected tooth. The purpose of this study was to analyze restorations performed using Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART), providing information on the durability and effectiveness of dental restorations. For its preparation, a search was conducted in the Scopus (n=59), Cochrane (n=55), BVS (n=388), and PUBMED (n=287) databases, using the descriptors "Atraumatic Restorative Treatment," "Dental Caries," and "Glass Ionomer Cements." The inclusion criteria were clinical studies, technique and material testing studies, and restoration evaluation studies. Studies presenting insufficient results, deficiencies in methodological description, and those addressing other types of dental caries treatment were excluded. After searching the digital platforms of 789 selected articles, 18 were selected for this study. It was concluded that atraumatic restorative treatment has proven effective in various clinical situations, providing good durability and minimizing invasive procedures, being easily applied both in dental offices and in settings with limited resources.
